Evangelos Spanos (b. 1980), Greek American New York City based, is one of the brightest and most promising pianists of the current generation of international performers in the US. During his studies at the University of Kansas (D.M.A. 2011) and while he was a student, Evangelos was continuously performing, teaching, and promoting classical music and piano music of Greek composers.
He is currently holding a full-time position as a company pianist at American Ballet Theatre and accompanies for classes at School of American Ballet and Steps on Broadway. Since his student days, Evangelos has performed with his colleague, Daniel Cunha. This duo has performed in the US and is booking concerts in Europe. The piano duo performed at the University of California at Riverside, Encuentros/Encounters 2015 Center for Iberian and Latin American Music. Evangelos, performed at the Music Festival, Evmelia, in Greece where he collaborated with various chamber groups (all Nikolai Kapustin program) and presented various solo performances. The versatile Dr. Spanos concentrates on classical music but is at home in jazz and rock, working with Tim Ries of the Rolling Stones Project.
In addition to his work with regional Equity theatres, Evangelos has served/serves as music staff at the Kansas City Ballet, University of Missouri in Kansas City, Lyric Opera and has performed for many opera productions at the University of Kansas as well as accompanying master classes for Martha Graham, Merce Cunningham, Dance Theatre of Harlem and Mark Morris Dance Company to name a few. Most recently, he performed for productions at Kaufmann Center for the New Opera Everest by Joby Talbot, Music Hall (Book of Mormon), Starlight Theatre (Hairspray, Grease, Something Rotten, Little Mermaid) as well as playing for Evanescence and Zelda music concerts. Besides performing, Evangelos composes original music for media and dance projects. Parallel Lives (electronic composition) has been performed by the Kansas City Ballet and Deeply Rooted Dance company in Kansas City, Chicago, and New York (Brooklyn Academy of the Arts) in choreography by Gary Abbot.
He has recorded with the University of Kansas Wind Ensemble (Naxos Label) and has performed across the US, in Greece, and in the Czech Republic. In addition, Evangelos has appeared on Greek National TV for the show Technopolis and several local programs.
A legion of artists and performers are ready to promote Evangelos in his musical pursuits. His teacher and mentor, Sequeira Costa (1929 – 2019), has had a long, distinguished career as a concert performer on the World stage as well as being a Distinguished Professor of Music at the University of Kansas. Costa (himself was a child prodigy and student of the surviving pupil of Franz Liszt, Jose Vianna Da Motta. Sequeira Costa later studied with Marguerite Long, Jacques Février and Edwin Fischer. Professor Dinos Mastroyiannis of Volos, Greece (student of Brazilian maestro Roberto Szidon, himself a pupil of Claudio Arrau) is another distinguished musician who is more than willing to lend Evangelos support in launching his career.
Evangelos was born in Larissa, Greece and holds degrees from the University of Kansas (Doctor of Musical Arts-2011 graduated with honors, Master of Music 2005), Music Conservatory of Volos, Greece (Piano Diploma-2002 graduated with the highest distinction) and Music Conservatory of Larissa, Greece (Degree in Music Harmony-1998).
